It was Manila's second time to host the pageant, having hosted the Miss Universe 1974 pageant some twenty years earlier.
A great way to start up each day,
When you want to say "Welcome, we wish you the best":
Just smile up a smile as you say,
Oh, oh, Mabuhay!
You're smilin', Mabuhay!
You're stylin', it's a great salutation, Mabuhay!
Mabuhay! Persuasion! Hello! You are delicious!
It's a one word flirtation, Mabuhay!
Won't you join us and try out this Philippine way,
To say welcome, we're glad that you came.
It's a neat little greeting to start up each day.
Just smile up a smile and exclaim,
Oh, oh, Mabuhay!
Hello there, Come join us.
Let's go there, Mabuhay!
God bless you, Mabuhay!
Mabuhay! you're singin',
Mabuhay! we're swingin',
May you have a wonderful day!
Well, there's one thing about it you can't live without!
Don't doubt it.
Just shout it.
Mabuhay!

Two months after, a bigger challenge arises: Miss Universe 1994 in Manila, and the last Miss Universe titleholder then from the USA was Shawn Wetherley from, where else?, South Carolina!!!. How did you prepare for that pageant, in only two months time?!?!?
At that point, I had been training for nearly 7 months. There wasn't much more that I needed to do differently. I just needed to stay on track. I also had to find the perfect dress, and wardrobe. The Miss Universe Pageant experience was even more intense than the Miss USA pageant. We were in a foreign country, with more competition, international languages, extreme heat, and for a longer period of time. (5 weeks total)

MISS MAURITIUS Viveka Babajee, was a very controversial figure due to her involvement in the 1994 Metro Manila Film Fest Scandal. She was a presenter for the Best Actress award together with actress Gretchen Barretto, an award which was very much disputed. Sixteen years later, on June 25, 2010, Babajee committed suicide.
MISS MALAYSIA Liza Koh, made a public apology on behalf of her country about the arrest of 1200 Filipina princess in Kuala Lumpur. This led to a warning from the Malaysian Foreign Minister not to make political remarks.
During May there was also a probe by the Commission on Human Rights as to whether a police round-up of street children was intended to improve Manila's international image during the pageant events. This was also criticised by MISS THAILAND, Areeya Sirisopha Chumsai, even though the same scenario happened in their own country during the Miss Universe 1992.
MISS RUSSIA Inna Zobova, was detained for 15 hours in a windowless room at an airport in Bangkok, Thailand en route to Manila because she did not have a transit visa.
